Philanthropy

  • Staffed foundations
  • Corporate foundations
  • Public foundations
  • Individual philanthropists

Whether you are just beginning to think about your giving or you have been funders for several generations, we are sensitive to the unique challenges faced by your culture, your heritage, your priorities, and your mission.

As advisors, we bring different expertise to our work with grantmakers and grantmaking organizations.

Marker has expertise in strategic grantmaking and typically works on an episodic basis - short term contracts or one-time workshops/presentations. He has had specialized experience working with venture philanthropy projects and funding partnerships.

Goldsmith typically accepts longer term project contracts with funders and/or organizations. Her expertise is primarily in program evaluation.

Both of us teach in the Grantmaking section of NYU's George Heyman Jr. Center for Philanthropy. This provides us with contact with a very wide range of lay and professional practitioners, and helps us to maintain our "edge" and familiarity with current developments in the field of grantmaking.

Because we charge on a time or project basis, we work with foundations and organizations of all sizes. We have had professional experience with funders with assets in the $Billion range; and we have had clients who needed help distributing $100,000. We assume that your asset manager is helping you maximize the value of your holdings; we help you maximize the values of your giving.

We are not money managers, attorneys, or accountants, and are delighted to work with your professional advisors. On occasion, a client asks for our assistance in locating these professional services. At that time, we call upon professionals with whom we maintain a strategic alliance.

We do not accept any contract which calls for development or fund raising work. Our principle is that we serve the grantmaking community and therefore will not permit even the appearance of a conflict of interest. We will do presentations to an organization about trends in philanthropy, but will not advise that organization on specific strategies or funders.
